Preventive Dentistry
We strongly adhere to the principle "Prevention is better than cure". We stress regular, periodic checkups and cleanings. We take selective, judicious x-rays to diagnose dental problems in the early stagaes , before they become major, expensive repairs. All patients are shown their own teeth on the computer monitor by the use of our Intra-oral Camera, and needed treatment is carefully explained on the screen. This way the patient can better understand the need for treatment and can become a more eager and willing participant in their dental care.
Children also receive periodic applications of fluoride on the teeth to strengthen them against cavities. We also strongly advise all parents to have their children's teeth protected from getting cavities on the chewing surfaces of teeth by placing sealants on the teeth. In simple terms, sealants involve the placement of a thin plastic coating on the chewing surfaces of teeth, thereby preventing acids and sugars from attacking those surfaces to cause decay.
Basic, General Dentistry
We offer a full range of general dental services, including white, tooth-colored fillings, silver fillings, resin and porcelain inlays and onlays. We do extractions, and, as a result of our over 20 years of experience, can often extract teeth that a lot of other general dentists hesitate to attempt. We also perform surgical removal of a lot of impacted wisdom teeth.
Nobody loves pain, and most people are very fearful and anxious of the entire dental experience. We are very aware of it, we want our patients to be comfortable and do a
lot of things to minimize their anxiety. If drilling for cavities involves giving local anesthesia, we first apply topical anesthetic and wait for enough time before giving the anesthetic. Next, we use our Wand, an electronic method of injecting, instead of the usual metal syringes. The Wand allows for a smoother, slower gentler injection and most patients tell us they feel it much less. We also gently move the lips and cheeks during the injection, helping to minimize the discomfort. Finally, we inject very slowly, and most patients say they are pleasantly surprised that they feel it far less than their previous injections.
For the patient suffering from acute dental phobia and anxiety, we can prescribe medicines that help them relax and enable them to get the needed oral care rather than let their teeth deteriorate due to their fears.
We also prepare athletic mouthguards to prevent sports injuries, occlusal mouthguards (or nightguards) for patients with teeth grinding and "Silent Night" appliances for patients who snore.
If a bright, pleasant, confident smile is what you are looking for, Newtown Family Dentistry is the right place for you. More
Root Canal Therapy
When pain strikes, you need immediate relief! In the past, a fast solution to tooth pain was extraction. Today, however, many a tooth that would previously have been extracted can be saved through root canal therapy and can serve for many years as a useful, functional tooth. Most of the time, we can finish them in one visit, providing fast relief to a severe toothache. That tooth can then be fitted with a tooth-colored, porcalain crown and you have a great-looking solution.
We do most of our root-canals in our office itself (except for some molars), so you do not have to go from one office to another.
Not all root canals are needed due to severe pain as a result of a deep cavity. Sometiems a root canal may be indicated due to a blow or an injury that resulted in fracture of the tooth, or due to gum infection or as a selective procedure before certain cosmetic improvements to the teethmore....
Periodontal Therapy- Treatment of Gum Disease
Gum disease is the largest single cause of tooth loss in the country today. More than 50% of all teeth lost in adults are as a result of gum disese. And yet, gum disease can easily be eliminated, if treated in the early stages. We have had excellent results with non-surgical treatment of gum disease. We also perform some periodontal surgical procedures in our office; others we refer to a gum specialist (periodontist) more.....

Partial Dentures can be made of all-acrylic, cast metal or Valplast.
The all-acrylic kind (also called a flipper) are the fastest to make, often in 1-2 days, and are also the least expensive. The missing teeth are usually made of acrylic, held in a base of acrylic. They are an excellent way to replace one or a few front teeth, usually whilst undergoing treatment in other areas of the mouth or while waiting to heal up from other treatment. However, some people wear their flippers for years and find them very functional and very comfortable.
Cast Partial dentures are very fine, very precisely-fitting partials cast to precision on a model of your teeth. In this kind of partial, the missing teeth are usually made of acrylic, and they are held in place on a base of metal. This metal base fits very snugly in your mouth, has excellent retention, is very easy to keep clean and fresh and conducts temperatures so they feel more life-like than partials made of all acrylic. The only drawback is that they take a little longer to make, they are more expensive than the flippers and sometimes, the metal of the supporting base can be visible. more....
Finally, partial dentures can be made of a space-age, thermoplastic, soft, durable, flexible material called Valplast.....
Full Dentures can be of the Immediate kind, in which the teeth are extracted only on the day the denture is ready to be inserted in your mouth, so that you do not have to walk around and go to work without teeth for even a single day.
